Mark has 25 years’ experience in major scaffolding supply and services. Mark is well known throughout the mining and construction industries. Originally from Newcastle in the UK, and his family are now well settled West Australians after being here for 36 years. Mark has a keen business sense and has lead SMS from a small venture which he started in 2001, into the business that now services and supplies access solutions to many major mining, resource and construction customers throughout WA and the NT.
Mark started work at a young age when he joined the Royal Navy. In service, he was appointed to senior roles in procurement and supply and his like for that discipline of meeting the right supply and on time, lead him towards his goal to establish the SMS Contracting.
Mark together with his team at SMS are not a group that will sit still and admire the current level of growth of SMS. Already there are plans to keep expanding the business.
Mark also recognised a need for reducing risk for workers engaged in confined space tasks so in 2016 Mark and his team, introduced its SMS Sentry Services.
Mark has identified a need to standardise scaffold training and to promote a safer first approach to all major works. Through his SMS Group Services this goal can now start to reach the industry ears and eyes to assist with achieving no harm safe targets.
Mark still supports his favourite round ball team Newcastle and recently purchased a ski-boat for some relaxation on the Swan river on weekends.
Has a 20-year background in mining and processing plants for bulk ore and precision minerals, as well as 12 years’ experience in corporate supply and procurement.
A seventh-generation West Australian, Ian’s heart is on continued success and growth for the state to benefit the next generations. He started work in the timber industry as his father and family before him had done. But in 1985 he realised that the timber industry was not the option he wanted for his family. That lead to a 15 year engagement with BHP in senior supervisory positions at Port Hedland where he gained a comprehensive knowledge in the mining industry. There was a five year break from the Mining when Ian accepted a new challenge as Recreation Manager for Port Hedland. He moved down to Perth in 2005 and was soon back into the mining scene working in Procurement and Contract management for mining. A two year engagement in 2011/2012 with SMS lead to a broad understanding of the shutdown access services and the many aspects of mobilising and demob large teams to major clients in Mining and the resources industry. Ian returned to SMS at the start of 2017 with a challenge from the business owner Mark Welsh to look at business development opportunities with in SMS current target markets and beyond. Ian has a reputation for doing what he says he will and is trusted in the Mining and Construction industries.
He enjoys history research, is a Eagles supporter and loves watching Cricket. He has also done public speaking and published works on WA history and collects WA history books, antiques and sporting memorabilia.
Ian is married with four adult children and eight grandchildren.
After years of managing aquatic and recreation centres Samantha then moved into the training and assessing industry. Initially starting off as a trainer / assessor she quickly moved into executive positions. Samantha is committed to excellence and constantly developing her knowledge in all aspects of business.
