COURSES SUITABLE FOR BOTH EXPERIENCED AND LESS EXPERIENCED WORKERS.Working at heights requires no fear of heights but a understanding of risk. There is a range of skills and procedures you need to know in order to ensure you and your colleagues’ safety when working high above the ground. That is why at SMS Group Services, we offer working at heights training that is suitable for both experienced workers and less experienced workers. Our working at heights training courses (RIIWHS204D Work safely at heights) are aimed at providing candidates with the required abilities, skills and knowledge to perform a range of jobs while working at heights, safely and competently. The course covers theoretical and practical aspects, including selection, inspection and the safe use of heights safety equipment. This is a one-day course Though this Unit of Competency doesn’t have an expiry date, many companies will expect workers to be reassessed every two years (refresher training) to ensure they remain competent in the proper wearing of a harness, and attaching it to suitable anchor points to protect workers in the event of a fall from heights. This is one of our most popular courses.
There are no prerequisites for entry to this course however students are required to have sufficient numeracy and literacy skills to read and comprehend safety instructions on construction sites and be physically fit to perform work at heights. I.e. No back problems, heart conditions, vertigo etc.
Participants must wear appropriate safety clothing including long trousers or Jeans and steel capped boots.
In order to reserve your position on this course 50% of course fees are payable by electronic funds transfer, direct deposit, credit card or cash payment at reception or you could mail a cheque payable to SMS Group Services. Balance of fees are payable on commencement and prior to the issuance of certification.
Companies MUST provide a valid Purchase Order prior to receiving a booking confirmation for personnel attending.
- Full Course / Unit fees $300 – 10 hours
- RPL $250 – 5 hours
- RCC Refresher Competency Certification $150 – 5 hours
This course is delivered over 10 hours for full course and 5 hours for refresher training.
Upon commencement, students are provided with learner manuals and (if appropriate) any other resources that may be relevant to their work environment, such as company safe work procedures etc.
Training and Assessment will be delivered face to face utilising a combination of classroom theory and practical activities at the SMS Group Services or at the client organisation’s workplace.
The assessment will include a written theoretical test and practical demonstrations using a nationally endorsed assessment instrument.
All participants attending this training at SMS Group Services are required to wear appropriate safety clothing including long pants or jeans and steel capped footwear.
Hard hats and other PPE including safety harnesses, Lanyards etc. will be supplied as required.
Please also bring with you;
- Smile and a sense of humour
- You are welcome to bring your own hard hat and other PPE if you prefer, but it is not essential.
- RPL and RCC students are required to bring proof of previous learning
If delivered at client organisation work-place, the use of a suitable structure within the work environment must be possible to demonstrate common work practices, equipment selection, use and maintenance processes as well as to consolidate candidates understanding of hazards and controls.

This Unit of Competency may assist with employment in the Mining and Resources industry or for those seeking work in Civil Construction where the job role requires them to conduct work at heights or wear fall protection equipment.
On completion of the students may undertake further studies in a Certificate II or III in Surface Extraction Operations or any other qualification requiring this Unit.
RPL is a form of assessment that acknowledges skills and knowledge gained through:
- Formal training conducted by industry or education
- Work experience
- Life experience
The main principle of RPL focuses on the outcomes of learning rather than when or where the learning occurred. Evidence of competency is collected by the student and submitted to the nominated assessor and assessment is made based on the required industry standard within the relevant training package unit of competency. SMS Group Services is responsible for the quality of the training and assessment in compliance with the Standards for RTOs 2015, and for the issuance of the AQF certification documentation.
Once the student has commenced the assessment service in their chosen Unit of competency SMS Group is committed to completing the delivery of the assessment within the agreed duration and will further negotiate the timing for completion of the assessment if a student is unable to complete the course due to illness or extenuating circumstances.
